Zhou Wanlei, vice rector of City University of Macau (CityU) and dean of Faculty of Data Science, recently attended the 2024 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research, and Application at the Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, where he delivered a keynote speech titled “Machine Unlearning: A New Requirement of the AI Era” to discuss the research progress and related applications of machine unlearning. Meanwhile, Vice Rector Zhou signed a cooperation agreement with Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU) on behalf of CityU to launch a joint cultivation program for doctoral students.
Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei mentioned that people’s lives had a positive impact due to the significant progress of machine learning in the past decade. He highlighted the concepts of “machine unlearning” that had been formed based on privacy issues, usability considerations, and the “rights to be unlearning” in the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence AI. Vice Rector Zhou then conducted a comprehensive discussion on the operating mechanism and related theoretical knowledge behind machine unlearning, introducing the reasons behind its existence, the latest progress, and solutions to application scenarios.
On the same morning, Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei and Vice President Yao Juming of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University signed a cooperation agreement. This partnership would leverage the scientific and educational strengths of both universities and launch a joint doctoral cultivation program to enhance their international competitiveness while fostering scientific research collaboration between both sides.
The 2024 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research, and Application was guided by the Ministry of Education and hosted by the National Center for Schooling Development Programme and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education, aiming to bring together the resources of global universities, research institutions, and enterprises to build an international cooperation platform for industry, education, research, and application.
