1. Programme Introduction

The HKU Summer Institute (HKUSI) Programmes 2026 are short-term learning initiatives launched annually by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) during the summer. Designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students worldwide, these Programmes aim to help students explore academic interests, plan career paths, and experience a fulfilling summer at this top-tier university in Asia.

Categorized into three major types – Research, Immersive Programmes, and Multi-location Programmes – each Programme is uniquely crafted to cater to individual passions and interests. Participants will have the opportunity to expand their international peer network, facilitating future career development and unlocking the vast potential of China, Asia, and the global market.

4. Fees

5. Language Requirements

-If English is your first language or the teaching medium at your institution: Upload a declaration form (click to download) and a transcript showing your latest results.

 

-If not: Submit one of the following to prove English proficiency:

•IELTS (Academic, 6.5+; online/home editions not accepted);

•TOEFL iBT (93+; ITP/home editions not accepted);

•CET-4 (493+)/CET-6 (450+);

•IB (relevant grades);

•GCE (relevant grades);

•Cambridge CPE/CAE (180+/C1);

•SAT Reading & Writing (610+);

•PTE A (64+);

•DET (125+ with 115+ in each band), or other proof (e.g., institutional reference, English transcript).

 

6. Application Materials

•Personal ID:

•Recent headshot (≥40mm×50mm/1200×1600px, PDF/JPG);

•Local students: HK ID, Mainland Permit (for multi-location prog.);

•Non-local students: Passport (valid ≥6m), visa/HK ID (if any)

•Education & English Proficiency: Certificates/transcripts (English translation if needed, with school/name/grading system);

•English proof (e.g. HKCEE/DSE/IELTS/TOEFL) or Declaration Form

•Additional: Programme-specific docs (e.g. recommendation, personal statement)

8. Payment

-Application Fee: HKD 400 (1st programme); HKD 250 per additional programme. Non-refundable, non-transferable. Multiple programmes allowed if no schedule conflict.

-Programme Fee: Varies by programme. Check individual programme details. Discounts available.

-Student Visa Fee: HKD 1,100 (non-refundable, non-transferable). Apply online via https://www.studentvisa.hku.hk/. Pay with Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay (avoid debit cards).

-Accommodation Fee: Choose HKU Residential Hall or recommended hotel. Check Summer at HKU - Accommodation Webpage and book online (instructions via email).

-Social & Cultural Activities Fee: Mixed free/paid activities. Details on Summer at HKU - Social & Cultural Activities Webpage; book online (instructions via email).

All fees non-refundable after offer acceptance. Pay online via credit card/ePayment.

 

9. How to Apply

-Check Eligibility

Review programme details, language requirements and eligibility criteria listed in Undergraduate and Secondary School Programmes.

-Submit Application

Register an account on the HKU Summer Institute Online Application System, fill in the form and upload required documents. Pay the non-refundable application fee via MasterCard, Visa, UnionPay, WeChat Pay, AlipayHK, Alipay or FPS.

Applications are processed only if all documents and fee are submitted by the deadline.

No amendments allowed after submission; contact the institute for personal detail changes. Check information carefully before submitting and keep records.

-Accept Offer

Confirm offer acceptance via the system before the deadline. Log in, click "Accept Offer" (upload reply slip if required by the admission letter) and confirm.

-Pay Fees

Settle programme fee, accommodation fee (if applicable) and social & cultural activities fee (if applicable) by the deadline per payment instructions.

-Apply for Student Visa

Non-Hong Kong permanent residents must apply for a student visa via the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) upon receiving the Notice of Admission, with a processing time of 10–12 weeks. Mainland Chinese applicants need an extra 2 weeks for the Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao and a D endorsement. Valid visa is mandatory for immigration checks and class registration.
